Carol Martin JP BASW OAM
Director, Government and Community EngagementCarol is a Yamatji and Noongar woman from Geraldton, with a rich background in social work, business management, and politics. She holds a degree in Social Work from Curtin University and has worked as a social worker and counsellor in the Kimberley region. She is trained in providing culturally sensitive Human Resources. She was the first Aboriginal woman to be elected to any Australian parliament, serving as a Labour Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia between 2001 and 2013, representing the Kimberley constituency.
Prior to her political career, Carol was the joint owner of Martin Building Services in Derby from 1984 until 2001. Over the course of 20 years, Martin Building Services provided major services to remote communities in the Kimberley.
Carol has made significant contributions to the Aboriginal community, particularly in helping to return missing Aboriginal children to their families and supporting families affected by the Stolen Generation. In addition, she has been instrumental in driving the success of the Yamatji Nation ILUA negotiations, one of the most productive Native Title negotiations to date. Carol served as one of the key negotiators in this landmark agreement.
In 2008, Carol was appointed to the board of Doornjil Yoor-dininy, the Indigenous contracting arm of MacMahons. She served on the board for a year before retiring in 2009, due to a heavy workload and extensive travel commitments for her parliamentary duties.
In her more recent roles, Carol was the inaugural Chair of the YSRC and served on the board until 2022. She has also played a crucial role in developing community plans and training programs in remote Kimberley, which have empowered communities to create sustainable economic models for growth and investment.
Today, Carol brings her extensive expertise and experience to her role as a Director of a Binthart Resources, where she continues to champion social justice and community development
